Security Guard Sentenced To 14 Years Imprisonment For Rape
A security guard,Kenechukwu Okonkwo who is 32 years of age has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for raping a 29 years old virgin.
Delivering the judgement,Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye at the Ikeja high court,Lagos described rape as an act of extreme violence against women,maintaining that there should be a zero tolerance to any form of violence against women and vulnerable members of the society.
Giving the judgement,she said,''I hereby sentence you,Kenechukwu Okonkwo to 14 years imprisonment to commence from March 24th 2017.
According to the news agency of Nigeria,Kenechukwu was arraigned in court on July 14th,2015 on a charge of rape which is contrary to Section 258(1)of the criminal law of Lagos state 2011.At the trail,the prosecution which was led by Adeniji said Okonkwo had committed the offence December 27th 2013 at his one bedroom apartment in Ketu,Lagos state.
Adeniji said,''The complainant was a 29 years old saleswoman who was a virgin''.She became friends with Okonkwo a security guard at the super store where she supplied goods,she however confided in her friend(Okonkwo)when she was about to be evicted from her accommodation and he offered to help by keeping some of her belongings in his apartment.
Trouble started when she came over to inspect his apartment,which was a,''Face me,i face you house'',if it will suitable for her or not.
As she was about leaving,Okonkwo blocked her exit and forcefully dragged her from the corridor into his room,she screamed and begged but all to no avail,he responded saying,''you have been suffering me for too long''.
The prosecutor said the convict gagged her mouth with a wrapper to stop her from screaming and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her inside his room.The noise however attracted co-tenants who came to help but was futile.According to Adeniji,it was when the landlord came over to enquire about the commotion that the complainant was able to escape.
