Bungled vaccines kill about 15 children in South Sudan
South Sudan government has announced that about 15 children have died in a botched measles vaccination campaign which saw persons as young as 12 years old administering the vaccines.
In a joint statement, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Agency,UNICEF said the affected children died in a rural town of Kapoeta in May and about 32 were said to have recovered after suffering from vomiting, fever and diarrhea.
According to the government of South Sudan, the 15 children that died were under the age of five and that investigations were ongoing to determine whether the families of the victims will be compensated.
The ongoing measles vaccination is said to be targeting about two million children in the country and its not known if there was any official from UNICEF or W.H.O that was present at the time of the bungled vaccinations.
In a joint statement, the World Health Organization and UNICEF have expressed their dismay saying that the team involved in the vaccination were neither qualified or trained and that the deaths were tragic.
