Heavy rains and flooding kills about 91 people in Sri Lanka

Heavy rains and flooding in Sri Lanka have left no fewer than 91 people dead and more than 100 people missing in the latest Monsoon rains which has hit the southwest of the country.


According to the disaster management center,about 24,000 people,who are in 13 districts were much affected by flooding and landslides and these districts includes,Ratnapura and Kalutara.The Monsoon rains which has hit the southwest of the country,was said to have come after nearly two months of drought.

Speaking to CNN,the country's foreign minister,Ravi Karunanayake said that a ship load of supplies arriving from India will hit the Colombo port Saturday morning and that a much larger vessel will arrive on Sunday carrying personnel and more supplies buttressing the fact that this was India's own little way of supporting and helping out.

Sri Lanka's military have been deployed for rescue operations to help out those in need and in distress and also,a 24 hour relief center has been setup by the home ministry for those that are affected.

Acting minister of Disaster Management,Dunesh Gankanda speaking to reporters said,when all final reports from the districts have been received,only then can the actual number of the dead and those that are missing,will be known and verified.
