Coffee intake reduces your chances of having liver cancer by 50%

The liver which is located below the right lung and under the rib cage is one of the largest internal organs in the body.Liver cancer also known as hepatic cancer or hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common type of liver cancer which develops in liver cells and symptoms may include abdominal pain, jaundice and weight loss.

Researchers have discovered that drinking a cup of coffee a day reduces the chances of having liver cancer by 20% and drinking up to five cups reduces it by 50%.

Reports from studies carried out by researchers from Southampton and Edinburgh Universities on participants which involved more than 2.25 million participants indicates that those who drank one cup per day had 20% lower risk of developing liver cancer than those who didn't drink at all.

A lead researcher,Dr. Oliver Kennedy of Southampton University said:

''Coffee is widely believed to posses a range of health benefits and these latest findings suggest it could have a significant effect on liver cancer risk.
''We are not suggesting that everyone should start drinking five cups of coffee a day, though there needs to be more investigation into the potential harm of high coffee or caffeine intake and there is evidence it should be avoided in certain groups, such as pregnant women.
''Nevertheless, our findings are an important development given the increasing evidence of HCC(HerpatoCellularCarcinoma)globally and its poor prognosis.''

Analysis from the Office For National Statistics, shows that since 2005,there has been increased cases of liver cancer and about 800 new cases are diagnosed each day in the United Kingdom alone, experts are attributing this to old age, obesity and smoking.

A Professor at Edinburgh University,Professor Peter Hayes added that:

''We have shown that coffee reduces Cirrhosis and also liver cancer in a dose dependent manner.Coffee has also been reported to reduce the risk of death from many other causes.
''Our research adds to the evidence that,in moderation, coffee can be a wonderful natural medicine.''
