China landslide has left about 140 people missing

About 140 persons are reported missing after a landslide which occurred on Friday night in Xinmo village in the Maoxian county were buried under the debris of rock and earth after a mountain collapsed on about 40 homes.


The landslide which occurred in south-western China,left about 40 homes and a hotel completely destroyed.A two kilometer stretch of a river was also blocked by earth and rock that came down from the mountain.

Search and rescue efforts saw about 400 rescuers including police officers searching seriously for survivors while using bulldozers and rope to lift heavy rocks,the search is said to continue until victims of the landslide are rescued.

According to local media,three people were rescued and taken to the hospital.The landslide was said to have occurred as a result of recent heavy rains in the province which is mainly known for tourism and it is unclear if there were any tourists among those buried by the landslide.
