Google has been fined by the European Commission for promoting its Shopping service in search results

The European Commission today fined Google 2.42 billion Euros(£2.1bn,$2.7bn) after it ruled that the Tech Firm has violated anti-trust rules by promoting it's own shopping comparison service in search results instead of giving competitors a level playing ground.

According to the European Union's Competition Commissioner,Margrethe Vestager,Google has apparently blocked the chances of other companies or websites to dominate and give seemingly better shopping options.

''Google has come up with many innovative products and services that have made a difference to our lives. That's a good thing but Google's strategy for it's comparison shopping service wasn't just about attracting customers or by making its product better than those of it's rivals.
''Instead,Google abused its market dominance as a search engine by promoting its own comparison shopping service in its search results and demoting those of competitors.
''What Google has done is illegal under EU anti-trust rules,it denied other companies the chance to compete on the merits and to innovate;and most importantly,it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation.''

The European Commission however gave Google a 90 days ultimatum to  put an end to the anti-competitive practices or face a 5% payment option from its parent company Alphabet which will amount to an average daily worldwide turnover.

Google has however responded to the ruling saying:

''When you shop online, you want to find the products you are looking for quickly and easily and advertisers want to promote those same products. That's why Google show shopping ads, connecting our users with thousands of advertisers, large and small in ways that are useful for both.
''We respectfully disagree with the conclusions announced today. We will review the Commission's decision in detail as we consider an appeal and we look forward to continuing to make our case.''
