A device that will ease snoring is to be launched soon!

Snoring is a condition where one breaths noisly during his or her sleep and based on research, about 45% of adults snore occasionally and about 25% are habitual snorers.Snoring occurs when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air through the passages at the back of the mouth and throat.

A condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is said to characterize multiple episodes of breath pauses  which is greater than 10 seconds at a time thereby, resulting in less amounts of oxygen in the blood which leads to the heart working harder than normal.

Patients suffering from this kind of condition may experience 30-300 episodes per night and can result in high blood pressure or even having a heart attack.

Devices known as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure(CPAP)that helps in alleviating or delivering constant air supply through a mask during sleep have already being used but most users of these devices have one or more complains about these devices ranging from discomfort, irritation and many others.

Experts have made available a magnetic collar that will be worn around the neck. The new device is called a Magnap System and it has two neodymium magnets, one will be implanted in the hyoid bone, that is the bone that is located between the chin and the thyroid cartilage.

Once it has been implanted through a small incision in the neck, then a custom made removable external collar with the second neodymium magnet is made available to the patient which is to be worn at the front of the neck.

The collar worn around the neck with the magnet now pulls the internal magnet on the hyoid bone forward which enables a force to open the upper airway and of course improves air flow.

A trial is already being conducted on patients in the U.S with the device implanted and the trial is expected to last till the end of the year.

A clinical doctor and Ear Nose and Throat consultant at Sheffield Children;s Hospital,Professor Jaydip Ray said:
''It is an interesting concept,it is an attempt to control snoring and sleep apnoea through minimally invasive measures. The technique is novel yet simple;the only restriction is the inability to have M.R.I scans due to the implanted magnet, long term results will be interesting.''

The type of magnet used are said to be the strongest and larger versions are also used in electric car motors and wind turbine generators.
