CDC confirms candidas auris in 122 people across the U.S

A fungus known as Candida auris is said to be spreading across more states in the U.S. according to a field report in the Morbidity and Mortality  week report issued on Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).

The report suggests that a rising number of emerging and often multi-drug resistant fungus has over time increased from 7-122 cases in the past nine months.

About 77 clinical cases were reported in 7 states and an additional 45 cases were also identified which makes it about 122 known patients with fungal infection as at May 12th and also, the average age was about 70 years old that were among the 77 clinical cases.

Candidas auris which is a fungal infection can cause severe illness and high risk mortality.A lead author and an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at CDC,Sharon Tsay said:

''It seems to affect the sickest of the sick patients, particularly those in hospitals and nursing homes with other medical problems, none of the infections reported in the U.S. was resistant to all available anti-fungal.''

Doctors are more concerned about the Candidas auris based on the fact that the fungus is showing resistance to three existing classes of anti-fungal drugs and that multi drug resistance has not been noticed in other types of Candida.
