A fire outbreak in the Western French city of Rennes has left about 27 students in a dormitory seriously injured and 3 others in a critical state.

According to reports, the fire which started in one of the rooms at the dorm, later extended to other rooms in the building.About 107 firefighters were at the scene of the incident and most of the students that were injured, suffered from inhalation of smoke.

The dormitory which is a three storey building, accommodates about 53 young people at the town of Cesson-sévigné.About 26 of the students weren't hospitalized but were taken into a nearby building for psychological support.

A student and an eye witness told AFP what he witnessed:

''The building caught fire on the first floor and it spread quickly, first and second year students live there.I was woken up by the screams, there was a lot of smoke and people had trouble getting out by the window.
''People jumped from the first, second and third floor,we had put mattresses down. The firefighters arrived maybe 15 minutes later.''

Another student,a second year by name Jason also gave his own account:

''We had a barbeque not far away since it was nice out but it finished at 12:30 am,and when it happened, everyone was sleeping.I jumped from the first floor window,i was in the room just next door.
''Once on the ground,i went around the building yelling to wake everyone up,some had trouble waking up.A lot had not realized that they had to evacuate right away.
''It was a big scramble,we separated into little groups;for some it went well, for others less so.Two students tried to put out the fire with extinguishers.''
