A new drug is approved for the treatment of A.L.S

ALS which is Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis belongs to a group of disorders known as motor neuron diseases which causes degeneration of motor neurons and nerve cells from the brain to the spinal cord and to muscles through out the body.


These neurons or nerve cells are responsible for movements like chewing,walking,talking and breathing.Symptoms may include stiffness or weakness of the muscles.

The F.D.A. has approved a new drug called Radicava or Edaravone on Friday for the treatment of Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) after more than 20 years of approving the  first drug,Riluzole.

According to the centers for Disease Control and Prevention.about 12,000-15,000 people in the U.S.alone have ALS.A study and trial carried out on 137 patients in Japan for a six month period showed that Radicava slowed down the progression of the disease significantly.

The manufacturer of the drug,MT Pharma America,a subsidiary of the Japanese company Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation,states that the drug must be given intravenously and will cost $145,524 a year.
