Magnitude 6.3 earthquake shakes Greek islands

Officials have reported a Magnitude 6.3 earthquake which struck the Greek islands of Lesbos and Chios and also the Aegean coast of western Turkey which left ten people injured and one person dead.


The victim who died was a middle aged woman who was trapped for about seven hours in her home in Vrisa before rescuers could reach and save her in the village of Lesbos.

The quake which happened Monday,left many buildings destroyed including homes,churches and shops.According to reports,the village of Vrisa was mostly affected which led to the collapse of buildings and blockade of roads.

According to the Governor of North Aegean Region,Christiana Kalogirou:

''It's a difficult situation,we are facing a disaster.Some 10 people are injured.The army is bringing in tents so people can spend the night.''

The earthquake caused panic among residents and the streets were filled with debris.Old and new buildings were said to be affected.Engineers who have arrived from Athens are already accessing the damage on buildings.
