Whooping cough outbreak in Alberta calls for serious concern

Southern Alberta has been hit with serious cases of whooping cough in the last days and according to health officials this is linked to the low immunization rates in some ares like Lethbridge.

Health officials confirmed that about 38 cases were reported in Lethbridge in the last couple of days and they are worried that the number might increase.

According to Vivien Suttorp who is the lead medical officer for health,Alberta Health Services while speaking with CBC said:

''We are getting multiple lab reports a day and we are definitely seeing this outbreak taking off at an exponential rate.
''We have had a lot of individuals and children exposed to cases of whooping cough and we have a lot of individuals who are not immunized at all.''

She was of the opinion that there might be more cases out there than the ones already known as most individuals might not even be aware that they have whooping cough.

''Individuals who have an ongoing cough for two or three months may not know that they have whooping cough because symptoms can be mild in adults and older children.
''It is the very young ones that are mostly likely to come to a physician's attention. There are many, many more out there that we are not aware of.''
