Popular swinging bridge in China collapses with tourists

The incident which happened during a labour day holiday in south east China's Jiangxi province saw about a dozen of tourists clinging to a swinging bridge after it collapsed suddenly on one side.


According to media reports the tourists moved all at the same time to the bridge in Meiling Lion Peak scenic area which lead to the collapse of the bridge on one side.

Witnesses say the collapse of the bridge is as a result of ill-mannered and young visitors while onlookers looked on in amazement at the trapped tourists.The vice president of the Nanchang Meillng Tourism Development Co.said:

''There was a strong sway.Pressure only fell on one side and it made the bridge tilt,causing some screws of the fence to break.''

The affected tourists were later helped on to solid ground and the bridge was quickly shut down for maintenance,however,no case of casualty was reported.

According to China news,the swinging bridge was built over 10 years ago and it has wooden boards as the floor,iron chains of 3ft in height as fence for protection and the whole bridge is 590 ft.
